Vathek is an early example of a Gothic novel by the British writer William Beckford (1760-1844). The lead character, caliph Vathek, goes on several adventures to gain supernatural powers. Instead of obtaining these powers, Vathek is doomed to live in hell for eternity. On these quests he meets eerie individuals and travels to fantastical places. This work is a beautiful example of the oriental influence in the 19th century. This version of the book is illustrated by Charles W. Stewart (1915-2001). Stewart was influenced by Victorian illustrators and engravers like George Cruikshank and Thomas Bewick. His oriental exploration did not stop at Vathek in 1953, in 1955 he also illustrated Fitzgerald’s classic The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám.
