Mezzotint of Jean Appelman.

Jean Appelman was mayor of Amsterdam. His political career began when Stadtholder William III reorganized Amsterdams city government in 1672. Appelman was appointed as a Councilor and, a year later, became Schepen (alderman), a position he would hold six times in total.

In 1674, Appelman was among those who advised William III not to accept the titles offered to him by the States of Gelderland: Duke of Guelders and Count of Zutphen. His influence in city politics continued to grow, and he was frequently entrusted with important and sometimes delicate assignments.

In 1689, as both Councilor and Weesmeester (orphan master), he was tasked-together with Jacob Boreel and Nicolaas Witsen-with overseeing the arrival of French refugees in the city. Appelman worked actively to help these newcomers find employment and support.

He also played a role in a politically sensitive matter in 1683, when he served as one of the commissioners responsible for examining documents expected from The Hague regarding whether Amsterdam should grant financial aid requested by the king. The city was not eager to approve this support, and Appelman apparently handled the situation in a way that displeased William III. This became evident in 1688: although Appelman was then serving as mayor, he was not included in the Stadtholders secret plans to seize the English crown-while the other three mayors were consulted.

Near the end of his career, Appelman was falsely accused by a man named Jan Hol of unlawful trade with France. The accusation was proven to be pure slander, and Appelman was completely cleared of all charges.

Jean Appelman remained active in city affairs until his death on December 27, 1694.
