Paris, De l'imprimerie royale, 1723, 4to., rebound in a half faux leather binding with ribbed spine and marbled paper, there is a printed titleplate on the spine and the book block has red coloured edges. New marbled paper endpapers were added that unfortunately don't match the marbled paper of the front and back of the book. The rebinding was poorly executed but it serves it's purpose in protecting the book block. The bookblock has waterdamage and waterstains, one page has a torn corner (no loss of text) and one page has a small tear in the margin, [4]+108+324 pp.

With an engraved frontispiece (Ant. Coypel Eques pinxit, Carol. Dupuis sculp. 1719), a woodcut printer's mark on the titlepage, lovely woodcut head and tail pieces, some woodcut initials, and there are 17 beautiful fold out engravings (of which 3 are maps and 1 has been repaired with tape) and 7 diagrams.

The French Academy of Sciences is a learned society, founded in 1666 by Louis XIV at the suggestion of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, to encourage and protect the spirit of French scientific research. It was at the forefront of scientific developments in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, and is one of the earliest Academies of Sciences. Each year a publication of the proceedings of the Academy was published, documenting the scientific discoveries of that year. This volume descibes the discoveries made in 1721 and was published in 1723.
