Imprint without place or printer just a date: ‘Gedruckt anno 1618’. 4to., later blue paper cover, ribbed spine, [2]+439 pp., the original binding is lost, the bookblock is intact and solid and leaves through easily, the first and last page – blank – (directly covered by the blue paper) are somewhat smudged and there are only some minor waterstains. With some lovely decorative initials and head- and tailpieces.
With some interesting contemporary handwritten notes in ink. On the titlepage: ‘Lucas von Achen me possidet, n. C. Hasaens d.’ On the page opposite the titlepage a reference to: ‘Arnoldus Montanus, 't Leven en Bedrijf der Prinsen van Oranje, pag. 396’ followed by a citation concerning a publication entitled ‘Waeg-schale’, published as a fierce statement against Ambassador Dudley Carleton and banned by law. The present work – ‘Wederlegginge van de weegschaal (…)’ – sets out to contradict the harsh words published in ‘Waeg-schale’. This Dutch note is followed by a note in Latin starting with some biographical information about the author of this book. Then there is another note: ‘Joh. Hildebrandi Withofii, anno MDCCXIV [1714] (…)’. Johann Hildebrand Withof (1694-1769) was professor of eloquence and history in Duisburg. He became famous for his history of the city of Duisburg. As a member of the Res Publica Litteraria, he was one of the last Latin poets.
