Etching on wove paper, by Ernst Willem Jan Bagelaar, after the painting Ludolf Backhuysen from 1704, executed in 1814, signed and dated below the image, platemark 99 x 152 mm., sheet size 118 x 170 mm.
A threatening scene with dark tones and high waves. Although Bagelaar (1775-1837) was originally an army man, he soon turned to a life of art after instructing himself in etching, basing many of the etchings on his own designs.
