Beschrijving
Oval portrait of Floris IV (24 June 1210 – 19 July 1234), the count of Holland from 1222 to 1234. He was born a son of William I of Holland and his first wife, Adelaide of Guelders.
Etching and engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 439 x 564 mm., platemark 295 x 401 mm., engraved by Cornelis Visscher (II) (1628-1658), for 'Principes Hollandiae et Westfrisiae', written by Petrus Scriverius, published in 1650 by Pieter Soutman in Haarlem, which contained a total of 38 portraits of the Counts of Holland, from the year 863 onward.
In very good condition, clean impression with ample margins. A horizontal crease over the middle of the sheet, a previous owner wrote some information on this print (in ink) in the top right corner. Margin edges a little uneven from handling.
Petrus Scriverius (1576 – 1660), the latinised form of Peter Schrijver, was a Dutch author and scholar on the history of the Low Countries, as well as classical literature.
