volume 1: later (ill fitting) binding, half linen and marbled paper, 9-12+396 pp. A previous owner of this book has gone through great lengths to disguise the fact that it concerns a volume 1 (of two). Every reference to this volume being just a volume 1 has been methodically erased. On the titlepage and on the last page the reference has been erased (by cutting away the specific words or inking them over) and some pages have been removed: *3 and *4 (the first preface by Ernst Willem Cramerus) and **4 and A1 (the table of content). Some stains and signs of foxing.
With an engraved titlepage (C. v. Noorde inv. et del. B. de Bakker sculps.) and 7 fold out engravings (B. de Bakker fec.). The engravings show some wear and tear, especially along the edges, and some repairs.
volume 2: original marbled paper binding, [24]+326+[18] pp., uncut pages, ruffled edges, worn binding with stains in the top margin throughout the book, clear printwork. With a handrwitten note of ownership: ‘dit boek behoort aan A.A. Schippers 1840’. Without engravings. This volume was later acquired and added to the first volume described above.
