Snelpersdruk van de Erven G.M. van Bolhuis Hoitsma, Groningen, [1857], 23.5×17.5 cm, printed hardcover paper binding, 19 pp. (pages 16-18 are missing), damaged spine, loose pages, front and back cover loose. The missing pages contain the poems: ‘De thuiskomst’, ‘Does en Mies’ and ‘Anneke’.
This booklet comes with two orange paper folders. One with has a title and instruction in German, (though the booklet is in Dutch): ‘Silhouetten = Schnittkunst’ (M.K. & Co's, gesetzlich geschützte Muster). The instructions explain that the silhouettes were meant to be cut neatly and could then be pasted on paper, in a booklet or even used as wall decoration. The backside is prepared with a paste that activates when moistened. This folder is empty. The second folder has no title or instruction, but it is filled with some illustrations in black (silhouettes), yet to be cut, one carefully cut silhouette and some tracing paper with drawings in pencil and black ink.
These folders were kept inside this booklet, since both showcase silhouettes and stimulate paper art (papier knipkunst), but they concern separate publications. The illustration on page 14 is traced in pencil, so this book indeed was also used for creating paper art. The clippings from the folder are not from the missing pages of the booklet.
Since the book was meant to be used creating paper art, not many would have survived, it is wonderful to see that this one does. Paperknipsels, knipselkunst.
