Beschrijving
Paris, Ballard, Le Jay, 1779, 8vo., half leather binding with marbled paper, ribbed and gold tooled spine, marbled endpapers, gilded edges, 165-262 pp., .
There are some signs of wear along the edges (especially the corners) and the hinge, but the book is beautifully bound (French binding) and the construction intact and solid. There is an engraved frontispiece portrait (Voiriot pinx., C.V.D. sculp.), a woodcut printer's mark on the titlepage (Je ne dois qua moi seul toute ma renommee). The poem consists of 7 parts (chant) and each part is illustrated with a beautiful engraving after C. Monnet by various engravers (I: C. Monnet inv., Belman sculp., II: C. Monnet inv., D. Née sculp., III: C. Monnet inv. del. 1772, C Baquoy sculp., IV: Car. Monnet del., N. de Launy sculp. 1773, V: Car. Monnet del., N. Penee sculp. 1773, VI: C. Monnet in. del. 1773, C. Baquoy sculp., VII: C. Monnet inv., L. Masquelier sculp.)
To make this book appear as an independent work, the titlepage and the half title have been modified. There must have been a remark about this being (from) the second volume, and that has been hidden with a piece of paper pasted over it.
