Bust-length portrait of Pope Paul IV (1476-1559), born Gian Pietro Carafa, the 227th pope (according to the caption). Around the portrait religious and mythological imagery is depicted.
Engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 283 x 189 mm. Engraved by Frederik Bouttats (Antwerp, 1621-1676), for Cornelius Hazart's publication 'Triomph der Pausen van Roomen over alle hare Benyders ende Bestryders …' (Antwerp: Michiel Knobbaert, 1678).
In good condition, cropped to the image edge. A small hole in the lower right far edge of the sheet (just outside image area). A small tear (5 mm) in the top edge of the image. Some general creasing and discolouration in the margins.
