Bust-length portrait of Pope Gregory I (c. 540-604), known as Gregory the Great and ’the Father of Christian Worship’, the 66th pope (according to the caption). A dove beside his head.
Engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 311 x 198 mm., platemark 278 x 176 mm. Engraved by Frederik Bouttats (Antwerp, 1621-1676), for Cornelius Hazart's publication 'Triomph der Pausen van Roomen over alle hare Benyders ende Bestryders …' (Antwerp: Michiel Knobbaert, 1678).
In good condition. Light pencil marks in the left margin, just beside the image. Some general creasing and soiling/discolouration in the margins.
