Etching of Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll right before his beheading
On 30 June 1685, Argyll was executed, like his father, on the maiden in Edinburgh. He had spent much of his time in Holland preparing for a death he anticipated, and he faced his execution with fortitude and good humour.
