Engraving of Hendrik Arnaud
Hendrik Arnaud was born in 1641 in France and became a leader of the Waldensians, a Christian religious community in the Alpine region of Piedmont (now Italy). At that time, the Waldensians were severely persecuted because of their Protestant faith. Arnaud organized resistance and, in 1689, led a famous return march of exiled Waldensians from Switzerland back to their mountain valleys in Piedmont.
