Christoffel de Assonville was a South Netherlandish statesman, diplomat, and jurist who played a major role in the government of the Spanish Netherlands during the 16th century. A trusted adviser to King Philip II of Spain, he worked on diplomacy, trade negotiations, and efforts to preserve political unity during the Dutch Revolt. Although he initially supported reconciliation between Catholics and Protestants, he later became a strong opponent of William of Orange and was linked to the political circles behind his assassination.
