Daniel Auber was a French Romantic composer best known for his comic operas. He worked closely with librettist Eugène Scribe and became one of the most successful opera composers of the 19th century. His most famous works include Fra Diavolo and La Muette de Portici, the latter considered an early example of French grand opera. He also served as director of the Paris Conservatoire for nearly 30 years.
