Edmond Auger (1530-1591) was a French Jesuit priest, renowned preacher, and influential religious writer. A student of Ignatius of Loyola, he became famous for his powerful sermons and was later appointed confessor to King Henry III of France. Auger strongly supported the Catholic cause during the French Wars of Religion and advocated military action against the Huguenots (French Protestants). His fiery preaching made him a controversial figure, and he eventually lost favor at court. He spent his final years in Como, Italy, where he died in 1591. Auger also wrote several influential religious works, including one of the first Tridentine catechisms in French.
