Jean-Antoine de Mesmes, often known as Comte d'Avaux, was a French diplomat who served under King Louis XIV. Although he was commonly called ‘Comte d'Avaux,’ he was not officially a count and used the title mainly to gain greater diplomatic prestige abroad. He represented France in several important embassies, including Venice, The Hague, and Stockholm. De Mesmes played a key role in negotiating the Peace of Nijmegen (1678), which ended the Franco-Dutch War. His diplomatic career made him one of France's most experienced and influential envoys of the late 17th century.
