Engraving of Avitus. Good condition.
Avitus (c. 395-456/457), also known as Eparchius Avitus, was Western Roman Emperor from 455 to 456 during the final years of the Western Roman Empire. Born into a noble Gallo-Roman family, he built a successful career as a soldier and diplomat and helped persuade the Visigoths to join Rome against Attila the Hun. After the death of Emperor Petronius Maximus, he was proclaimed emperor with Visigothic support. His reign faced strong opposition in Italy, where many disliked his reliance on Gallic and Visigothic allies. He was defeated by the generals Ricimer and Majorian, forced to abdicate, and died shortly afterward while returning to Gaul.
