Hans Willem van Aylva (1633-1691) was a Dutch military commander and lieutenant admiral from Friesland who served during the major wars of the 17th century. He took part in the famous Raid on the Medway in 1667 and later became a lieutenant general, helping defend Friesland against invading forces during the Franco-Dutch War. His successful guerrilla tactics disrupted enemy supply lines and contributed to the failure of the siege of Groningen. Van Aylva also fought in the Nine Years' War, commanding Dutch and allied troops in battles such as Walcourt and Fleurus. Nicknamed ’the Formidable General,’ he died in 1691 after being thrown from his horse while on a hunting trip.
