Leiden (Lugduni Batavorum), Samuelem Luchtmans, 1744, 8vo.. full leather binding, with sprinkled edges and goldtooled decorations on front, back and spine, including the Amsterdam city crest on front and back, making it clear this is a prize binding (prijsband). The book was bound by A.V. Rossum (‘Hof-Boekbinder’). A prize binding was awarded to students who excelled in some way. The dedication page with information about the awarded student and the occassion has unfortunately been cut out. Just part of the date remains: 30 Sept[ember] MDCCCX[…], making this a 19th century prize binding. [56]+858+[120]+39 pp. The binding has some damage along the spine with semi broken hinges, damage head and tail caps (kapjes) and worn corners exposing the board underneath. The sewing is intact, as is the connection between binding and bookblock, so the book feels solid. There are some waterstained pages in the front and some foxing, but otherwise mostly clean pages. With an engraved titlepage (F. Bleyswyk sculp.) and an engraved fold out map of the Roman Empire (with wrinkles along the fold lines).
