Two scenes from the frescoes decorating the facade of Palace Milesi, realized by Polidoro da Caravaggio. The delicate frescoes have vanished quickly. At the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica in Rome and at the Uffizi in Florence are preparatory drawings. The two plates in this lot represent the Rape of the Sabines (verkrachting van de Sabines/Sabijnse maagdenroof) [plate 2 of the series] and two senators addressing Barbarian commanders in chains [plate 6]; signed at the bottom: ‘POLIDORO inven. / I M Royer fe’.
