The editor of this book Gleeson White (1851-1898) is mainly known for his writing of critical books and articles about graphic design and art. White was part of a group of influential writers and artists that dominated the changing appearance of British art at the end of the nineteenth century. After he had worked as an editor for several magazines he was asked to be the founding editor for The Studio. This magazine about art and design is still seen as the breakthrough opportunity for great illustrators like Aubrey Beardsley, Charles Rickets and Edmund Dulac. The Studio was influenced by the ideals of the arts and Crafts movement. In The Pageant, White combined the great literature of his time with the art of upcoming artists. It contains stories and illustrations by W. B. Yeats, James McNeil Whistler, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Sir Edward Burne Jones. B2324

This hardcover is bound in brown linen with gilt stamped doves and ditto title on the front. It looks as if the cover has some light water damage at the back but this did not resolve in any problems for the contents. The pages are untrimmed. The edges are slightly worn but the overall condition of the book is good. 19 x 26,5 cm, [18] 1-243 [viii] pp. The book contains twenty photo reproductions and some smaller prints.
