Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard Grandville (1803-1847) was a French illustrator and caricaturist. He became immensely popular with his political satire. After the reinstitution of prior censorship on caricature in 1835, Grandville turned almost exclusively to book illustration, supplying illustrations for various standard works, such as The fables of La Fontaine, Don Quixote and Gulliver’s Travels. In these stories he never lost his satirical way of depicting his subjects. Even in his fables one can see how he felt about the contemporary society. B2220
