Antwerp, in aedibus Ioan. Steelsii, 1550, 8vo., full leather blind tooled binding, (rebacked) ribbed spine, [16] pp + 144 foliated pages = [288 pp.], worn Germanic binding with portraits (rolled) of kings, queens and saints, with new leather over the spine (rebacked), the endpapers show several visible repairs in off white paper, the fore-edge of the titlepage is reinforced with a strip of paper, the book block is in relative good condition, a few stains and some handwritten annotations, with woodcut vignet on the titlepage, there are some lovely woodcut initials, with 3 woodcut fold out maps and 1 more woodcut illustration.

About a ‘German war’, Bello Germanico. The war concerned is the Schmalkaldic War (Schmalkaldischer Krieg 1546-1547) and was fought within the territories of the Holy Roman Empire between the allies of Charles V (Karel V), Holy Roman Emperor and Maurice Duke of Saxony against the Lutheran Schmalkaldic League (Schmalkaldischer Bund). This League was a military alliance of Lutheran principalities and cities within the Holy Roman Empire during the mid-16th century. It was founded in 1531 in the town of Schmalkalden, hence the name.
