Interesting pamphlet connected to Arminianism and the Remonstrants. Arminianism is a movement of Protestantism initiated in the early 17th century, based on the theological ideas of the Dutch Reformed theologian Jacobus Arminius and his historic supporters known as Remonstrants. From 1618 Arminians across Holland were removed from office, imprisoned, banished, and sworn to silence. Twelve years later, Holland officially granted Arminianism protection as a religion, although animosity towards Arminians remained.
In the preface of this pamphlet the anonymous author emplores the reader to keep the secret of his identity, because of the risk of imprisonment:
‘Al is syn naem hier onbewist,
Voor die't secreet van dien ghemist:
Nochtans die d'Autheurd naem te vinden weet,
Wil [om red'nen] niet ontbinden 't secreet.’
The senitiment of this pampflet is pro Arminianism.
