Gaillard, 1753, complete set of 3 volumes, 8vo., full red leather bindings, richly decorated with goldtooling, gilded edges, volume 1: [12]+381+[1] pp., volume 2: 361+[7] pp. volume 3: [6]+408+[7] pp. The books are beautifully bound, the bookblocks are in good condition with intact sewing and mostly clean pages, though volume 1 has some waterstains, the hinges of the bindings show some damage, de spine of volume three has been rebacked, this volume also has new endpapers, the top endband of volume 1 is missing. With an ex libris bookplate of William Gordon esq. of Fyvie and an ownership signature by Norwood. The books are richly illustrated. Each book has an engraved frontispiece (Houbraken sculp.), there are two fold out engravings in volume 1, there are 45 full page engravings with artist's portraits (like the frontispieces) and then there are 4 smaller illustrations.
This book contains biographies of 17th century artists. It is an extremely important art historical source. It consists of three volumes and is a sequel to Carel van Manders Schilderboeck from 1604.
