Engraving of Willem van Alphen. Willem van Alphen, son of Jan van Alphen and Geertruid Paulusdochter Buis, was born in Leiden in 1608. At just twenty-three, he was appointed Secretary of the Court of Holland, Zeeland, and Friesland-a position he held until September 27, 1684, when he stepped down in favor of his son-in-law, Mr. Pieter van Starck, who was married to his daughter Angela van Alphen.
Van Alphen made a significant contribution to the legal profession of his time with his Formulary Book, also known as The Parrot. This work contained models for various legal documents-petitions, mandates, conclusions, memoranda, legal notices, and similar writings. It was highly regarded and went through at least six editions, the last of which was published in Utrecht in 1720, in two volumes.
