Joannes Antonides van der Goes (Goes, 3 May 1647 – Rotterdam, 18 September 1684) was a seventeenth-century poet, translator of plays, and playwright. Out of admiration for the Dutch-language plays of Hooft and especially Vondel, Antonides van der Goes began translating works by, among others, Horace, Ovid, and Silius Italicus into Dutch. In 1666 he wrote his first tragedy, Trazil, or China Overrun. Vondel was greatly impressed and a friendship developed, with Vondel even calling him his ‘son in the art.’ Antonides van der Goes also came into contact with poets such as Diderick Buysero, Francius, Laurens Bake, Joan Six, Broekhuizen, and Pluimer.
His best-known work was (and still is) his very extensive poem De Ystroom (1671). In it, Joannes Antonides van der Goes describes a walk along the IJ in Amsterdam. Along the way he passes the timber yard, the fish market, the home of Michiel de Ruyter, the West India House, the Naval Storehouse, the shipyard; he recounts the history of sandalwood, whaling, ice-skating, and much more-ultimately reaching Hoofts Muiderslot and his arrival in Zaandam. (In a modern edition the work spans more than one hundred pages.)
