Arnulf I, Count of Flanders, also called ‘Arnulf the Great,’ was the first Count of Flanders. He expanded Flemish territory through wars and political alliances, making Flanders one of the strongest regions in medieval Europe. Arnulf strengthened cities like Bruges as trade centers and played an important role in conflicts with the Normans and French rulers. He was the grandson of Alfred the Great through his mothers side and was known for both military power and government reforms.
