Jan Asselijn (c. 1610-1652) was a Dutch Golden Age painter known for his Italian-style landscapes, animal paintings, and battle scenes.
Asselijn became one of the first Dutch artists to introduce the bright, atmospheric landscape style associated with Claude Lorrain. His works often featured Italian ruins, pastoral scenes, and dramatic lighting.
His most famous painting, The Threatened Swan, shows a swan defending its nest from a dog. Although originally a nature scene, it was later interpreted as a symbol of Dutch resistance and associated with the statesman Johan de Witt.
Asselijn died in Amsterdam in 1652, leaving a lasting influence on Dutch Italianate landscape painting.
