Beschrijving
Remarkable anonymous pamphlet without impressum. 4to., 2 unsewn folded leaves (sewing holes visible), 8 pp., 19 x 25 cm, some stains (especially on the front page) and wrinkles, not found in any library catalogues or in Dutch Pamphlets Online, extremely scarce. Not in any library.
The spelling suggests the text originated in the Northern Low Countries, not the Southern Low Countries (‘gy’ in stead of ‘ghy’, ‘waarheyd’ in stead of ‘waerheyd’ for instance).
It seems to be a satirical song (In Dutch: spotlied) in which religious leaders are called out for pretending to just serve the people, when in fact they mostly serve themselves and choose financial gain.
A Latin phrase is used as header: ‘Turpe est doctori, cum culpa redarguit ipsum’, meaning something like: ‘It is discreditable for a teacher when a fault convicts him’.
The poem ends with the phrases:
‘Dit heusch gedicht betreft geen Mannen, die godvruchtig
In 't hart, in leer, en leeven zijn: maar die te luchtig
Door ergerlijk gedrag onteeren Jesus Bruid
Fijne ernst in schijn is erg. 't onheil wert hier beduid.’
The poem is aimed at religious leaders who preach one thing, but practise another, they are called out for their hypocrisy. People who are truly godly and pious are off the hook.
