The author of Ibrahim and Zulikah, Herman Jacques Constant Nouhuys (1821-1853) was raised by his aunt Maria Anna Besseling, to whom he dedicated this book. Nouhuys studied medicine, law and philosophy. Besides his studies he was a pianist, a painter and an author. The poem Ibrahim and Zulikah also appeared in the bundle ‘Heesterplanten’ (Amsterdam 1844). The story of Ibrahim and Zulikah is about two unfortunate lovers, who are kept separated by Zulikah’s father.
