London, John & Paul Knapton [et al.],1733, (25)+432pp. complete with 16 very attractive fold out engraved maps, full tooled calf leather binding, some damage and wear and tear to spine, remnants of library ticket on bottom of spine, title on ticket on spine, engraved armorial bookplate of Maxwell of Kirkconnell on endpaper, most likely James Maxwell of Kirkconnell who was born in 1708, the eldest son of William and Janet Maxwell, of Kirkconnell. He was sent to Douay College in 1721, at the age of 13, to complete his education, returning to Kirkconnell seven years later. James main claim to fame rests with his participation in the 45 Rising becoming one of the Princes aides de camp and captain of the horseguards under the colonelship of Lord Elcho, the son of the Earl of Wemyss. After Culloden, James escaped to France.
